Fight Back Fridays: End Competitive Grants in Education

Please sign this petition to secure state aid for schools

Please act now and sign the online petition in support of NYSUT’s urgent campaign to increase state aid restorations. The petition demands that $250 million set aside for competitive grants to schools should instead be fairly distributed according to the state aid formula. The petition launched this week already has more than 2,000 signatures.

The Governor’s budget proposal includes only $805 million more for schools, a partial restoration of the $1.3 billion state aid cut last year. Districts also must contend with a tax cap that crushes their ability to raise revenue at home. Redirecting the $250 million would provide additional funding toward the goal of restoring the $1.3 billion school aid cut imposed last year.

The Gov. believes that competitive grants are the answer to the inequities in public education funding in New York State.  The problem with competition in education is that its outcome includes far too many losers.  Our kids can’t afford to be on the losing end of Governor Cuomo’s political games and brinkmanship.  Join the true lobbyists for kids across the state (parents and teachers) and tell the Governor to stop gambling with our kids’ future.
